Short’s Kitchen: Aussie Burger
AUSSIE BURGER

Short: Every so often, Bald has to reconnect to his Aussie roots, or he gets even balder.
Bald: In Australia, a “root” can mean many things, so I have to be careful here. Look it up, if you don’t know what I’m getting at…
Short: Hmmm… suspicious… Anyway, all Aussies know what a “hamburger with the works” is, and that’s what I’m making for Bald today. A hamburger with EVERYTHING on it.
See how gigantic it is? That’s how my Bald likes it!
Here are the ingredients for the meat patties (4 servings)
1 pound of ground beef
1 egg
1/3 cup of breadcrumbs
1 large spoon of garlic powder or 2 cloves of garlic
(Bald: Short prefers fresh garlic but we’re out of it. We’ve had a lot of vampires hanging around lately.)
1 finely chopped, medium-sized onion (or 2 large spoons of onion flakes)
2 large spoons of cooking wine.
Salt and pepper to taste.
Here’s what you need for the toppings:
1 large sliced onion to fry.
4 eggs to fry.
4 rashers of bacon
1 knob of butter to fry the onion, egg and bacon.
Lettuce
Tomato
Canned beets
(Bald: An Aussie calls a beet a beetroot. No connection to the “root” alluded to above)
4 rings of pineapple
Ketchup (Bald: Tomato sauce if you’re an Aussie)
Mayonnaise
4 hamburger buns, toasted.

1. First, mix all the meat patty ingredients together (or get your Bald to do it)

2. Now, separate and shape the mixture into 4 patties. I made Bald’s patty bigger than mine, because he’s bigger than me.
Bald: Especially around the waist.
I put the other 2 patties straight into the freezer.
Bald: Where they belong! I never trusted those two.

3. Heat your knob of butter in a pan and add your sliced onion. Cook on a medium heat until they are soft and brown.

4. In another pan, cook your patties. 3-5 minutes each side should do it, depending on how well done you like them.

5. Add another knob of butter to your onion pan, then throw in your eggs and bacon.

6. While that’s all cooking, prepare your toppings. Lettuce, tomato, pineapple, pickled beets (Bald: Beetroot! Beetroot! Beetroot!), ketchup (Bald: Tomato sauce – I give up) and mayonnaise.

7. This is how Bald likes it~!
Bun-lettuce-tomato-pineapple-beetroot-mayonnaise-meat patty-tomato sauce (Ketchup)-onion-bacon-egg-bun!
Bald: FUN! Lemme at it, lemme at it

8. Bald squashed it down so it would fit in his mouth.
Bald: Back in Oz, we used to make ‘em so big, you had to sit on them to get ‘em mouth size. Or drive over them in a car. Or drop a piano on them from a tall building. Or…
Short: Shut your word-hole and eat!

Short: Yes, you did it! That’s my Bald! I guess this is the price you pay for hitching yourself to a bald Aussie in the Big Apple. When he gets homesick, you’ve got to build one of these giant burgers with the works! I have to say, it’s bloody good!
Bald: Spoken like a true-blue Aussie sheila!
Short: But you don’t need to have a kangaroo in your top paddock to enjoy it. Have fun, and I’ll see you again soon.

Yum! It looks great.
Janis, thank you!
I love the fried egg on it! I think I would have to go with the “dropping the piano it” method to fit it into my mouth.
Cookin’ Canuck, now you’re half-australian! ^^
we recently went to an aussie eatery in alphabet city and i saw the same exact burger you made on their menu! it sounds and looks very tasty

nina, my bald does have a huge mouth! ^^ thanks for your feedback.
jessie – simplyscrumptiousfoodie.com, to an australian, a burger with the works is like a pizza to an italian.
Elin – elinluv.blogspot.com , hope your piggy boy likes the burger. let us know. by the way, does he have a big mouth? ^^
That is such a tall burger and looks so delicious. I just made a kangaroo burger today as well!

Hi Angelia, thanks! You made yesterday’s top 9 and you handed me some good luck. ^^
Elin -elinluv.blogspot.com, thanks! i wonder how piggy boy got his name? but i guess you answered that “big mouth + big stomach!” my bald is much the same. i guess we have our cooking to blame for that ^^
eatlivetravelwrite.com, yeah, there’s nothing like a good old fashioned burger with the works to get the salivary glands pumping. here’s to the olden days~! ^^ thanks for the feedback.
penny aka jeroxie, kangaroo burger? wow! we had a kangaroo kebab in new york years ago but now the new york government has placed a ban on all kangaroo meat imports. something to do with a mistaken classification of kangaroo being a rodent! there is a move now to rectify this. where did you buy your roo meat? of course, you are in australia so you can get it more easily… can you buy it from butcher shops?
You’re no 1 on the daily nine, congrats! What a yummy-looking burger, really mouth-watering
That looks awesome! Love the running commentary as well and the shot of Bald fitting the burger in his mouth! I’d have to go over it with a rolling pin a few times to fit it in my gob.
Hungry Jenny x
Great post, beautiful pics, and – holy crap! – that burger looks amazing. Congrats on being FoodBuzz Top 9 too.
olive – latestrecipes.net, thank you! it is fun turning something as familiar as a burger into a real treat.
Hungry Jenny, thank you! bald and i like to have fun while we’re preparing and eating our food. gald you enjoyed it.
crankycheryl, thank you! the burger really is a meal and a half and it’s fun to make it, too.
I bought the meat from an organic meat wholesaler but yes, can be bought at some butchers. I love it. the meat is lean so need to mix in with fatty minced pork.
No lunch today !!!! Just read blog, burger looks great. I’m starving
yommy, we still talk about the burger you cooked a few years ago! do you want us to mail you one aussie burger and a cup of chips? – Short and Bald
